"Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” - Luke 12:27-28
This verse tends to always come to mind exactly when I need it.
Since Lucy started walking, her little world seems to have grown bigger with each step. Wondering through hallways, standing on her tip toes to reach countertops and running through the front yard have opened so many doors for her.
This evening, she was all about sinking her hands in the grass and grasping twigs, picking up rocks — anything she could get those chubby fingers on. Watching her study a weed or grab dirt with such fascination made me pause. At first, all my mom brain could focus on was the smudged peanut butter in her eyebrow and her unkept hair. Also, she should probably be wearing socks, right? “I’m a bad mom” began to course through my mind.
Then, I stopped.
Lucy wasn’t focused on, and didn’t care about, any of those things. She just cared about the grass between her fingers and all the new beauty she got to explore today. I wonder if God looks at me sometimes and wonders why I don’t consider all the beauty around me. Why I don’t consider the lilies. After all, they are more beautiful than anything manmade. And how refreshing. That we’re not called to “labor and spin” for beauty — because it’s already been provided.
